Abstract
Using self-report questionaire and some sup plementary measure we surveyed the prevalence of full scale side effects arising from taking current therapeutic medication in the mental hospital. The subjects were al chronic schizophrenics ascertained by DSM lf. And follwings are the signifiant results.
1. Overall prevalence rates of side effects were 89%
2. The prevalent behavioral toxicity were `memory impairment¢¥ (58 %), 2nd `depressive affect¢¥(45.6%)
3. Among autonomic side effects, the frequent complaints reported were ¢¥blurred vision¢¥ (63 %), cotislw;itton¢¥(56.8%), and `dry mouth¢¥(52.5%)
4. The lugher rankers of endocrine side¢¥ effects were incnstual irregularity¢¥ (55 % ), `decreased lilclio (45.9%), and `weight gain¢¥(44.5%)
5. General weakness¢¥(69 %) and `digginess / syncope(62.3 %) showed higher prevalence rates among other miscellaneous side effects.
6. The extrapyramidal symptoms(EPS) were c¢¥v:tltr;ituct by both subjectively and objectively in twills of `dystonia¢¥, `parkinsonism¢¥, and `akathisia,¢¥
wl 10 1 cliscla3ed 40.4 % 69.9 % and 217 % on subjective and objectively in lerns of ¢¥dystonia¢¥, ¢¥parkinsonism¢¥, and ¢¥akathisia¢¥ wlik disclosed 40.4%, 69.9%, and 24.7% on subjective raitung and 5.5%, 23.2%, and 20.5% on objective raiting respectively. The prevalence of parkinsonism was significantly decreased in the patients group with ¢¥short duration of illness(<5 yr)¢¥ and also with use of current antiparkinson drugs¢¥.
It should be emphasized that many of untoward side effectss of psychotropic drugs in the management of ehreic scluzophrenia were, so far, largely neglected in the clinicial setting.
